What ended Esther happiness is her overhearing the
conversation between Lawrence and Father Paul that Lawrence was going to up
marrying Ida McIntosh, the Hudson’s Bay factor’s daughter. Father Paul
convinced and explained to his nephew that he could not marry her because of
her red skin and she is a pagan Indian, also due to the fact of the significant
difference between both cultures. Even
though Father Paul knew that Esther was a good woman he couldn’t accept this
union between the missionary’s nephew and a pagan Indian.
After,
Esther heard the whole conversation she became heart broken and started to
think with repulsive anger and hatred towards Lawrence, Father Paul and the
future engagement. She didn’t want the man she loved to be married to another
woman, so as she tried to leave the house silently she found Lawrence sleeping
on the couch as she looked upon him with such love. Thought’s of him marrying
this other women angered her with such agony and then she began to think about
killing him because if she couldn’t have him no one can. In her anger she
pulled out a flint arrow that had snake venom on the arrows tip, she scratched
Lawrence’s wrist twice and as he stirred she left the house silently. However,
nobody could find who was responsible for Lawrence’s death even though she was
suspected.
Esther’s happiness ended because she couldn’t handle the idea of being without her soul mate. As a result she ended killing the love of her life.
