Do you think the message in Maugham's story is the same as or different from the message in the Aesop fable of the ant and the grasshopper? Explain.

I think that in Maugham's story is different from the message in the Aesop fable because in story of the Fable is trying to explain how important is to work and care about the future. Both characters are different point of view their own life so they are an example of what you can get or where you can be if you work hard for your future. Sometimes, we can enjoy our life doing anything that we like but we always need to think about the future. If somebody wants to have a good future, you need to work hard to obtain good results. However, in the story of the Maugham the Grasshopper ending in good conditions without work hard because of a stroke of luck and the ant never forgave the grasshopper because he was selfish at the end of the story. Even though the ant worked so hard, he didn't get the same results that the grasshopper ending with.

What ended Esther happiness is her overhearing the conversation between Lawrence and Father Paul that Lawrence was going to up marrying Ida McIntosh, the Hudson’s Bay factor’s daughter. Father Paul convinced and explained to his nephew that he could not marry her because of her red skin and she is a pagan Indian, also due to the fact of the significant difference between both cultures.  Even though Father Paul knew that Esther was a good woman he couldn’t accept this union between the missionary’s nephew and a pagan Indian.
After, Esther heard the whole conversation she became heart broken and started to think with repulsive anger and hatred towards Lawrence, Father Paul and the future engagement. She didn’t want the man she loved to be married to another woman, so as she tried to leave the house silently she found Lawrence sleeping on the couch as she looked upon him with such love.
